Radiant Heating System
History records the use of radiant floor heating in the days of the Roman Empire when fires under stone floors were used to keep the patrons warm in the Roman baths. Koreans have used the same principle for thousands of years to heat their home. And, for many years, Europeans have used hot water piping in the floors.
Nowadays, radiant floor heating, which is created by hydronincs--hot water traveling through narrow tubing--is used to offset the drawbacks of forced air heating systems and provides an even temperature throughout a room from floor to ceiling. Because of the coiled tubing distributed in the room, radiant energy moves in all directions and is converted to heat when it contacts walls, furniture or people. A floor that is slightly warmer than ceilings, walls, furniture and people will radiate its heat at a constant, comfortable rate without the need for the noise of air moving through ducts.
Radiant floor heating can be very economical. A radiant floor system generally uses 15 to 30 percent less energy than more common heating systems and, in some cases, uses only half the energy of a forced air system.
Although the initial cost of any heating system is important, it doesn't make much sense to invest in a home with just the right number of bedrooms and baths, with just the right kitchen and appliances, with just the right square footage to suit your family and then wind up skimping on a second-rate heating system.
